Franchise History
In 1946, the 49ers began play in the All-America Football Conference but moved to the NFL in 1950. They had many great players in that time frame but winning didn’t happen.
It wasn’t until the early 1970’s when they won three consecutive NFC Western titles that the fortunes began looking up.
Edward J. DeBartolo became the owner on March 31, 1977 and he signed Joe Walsh to be their head coach. Home games were moved to Candlestick Park that held over 68,000 fans. San Francisco won the Super Bowl in 1980 and then again in 1984 with SB XIX. Two more Super Bowl winners were in XXIV and XXIX.
