Franchise History

Jerry Richardson, a former wide receiver for the Baltimore Colts and current businessman, met with a group of other business people on July 18, 1987 to discuss the possibility of garnering a future NFL franchise.

It took six years for that dream to come true. On October 26, 1993, the National Football League entered into an agreement to bring a new franchise to the Charlotte, North Carolina area. The fans were elated with the news and Richardson said:

“This is a dream come true for me and my partners and for the 10 million people in the Carolinas,”

A site for the new stadium was selected by the ownership group known as the Richardson Group in Uptown Charlotte and would be a privately funded stadium that would seat more than 70,000 fans.

The first game of this franchise was played in the annul AFC-NFC Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. Fast forward to 2001 as the Panthers were not very good and ended the year with a 1-15 season. However, two years later, they won the NFC championship and played in Super Bowl XXXVIII.

In 2003, the Panthers, just two seasons removed from a 1-15 season, won the NFC championship to earn a berth in Super Bowl XXXVIII. This was almost unprecedented for a franchise to reach glory so quickly.

The team made the playoffs in 2005 and 2008 and then again in 2013, 2014 and 2015. The Panthers have reached the playoffs eight times, advancing to four NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowls. They have won six division titles, one in the NFC West and five in the NFC South.

Carolina Panthers Betting- Looking at the Numbers

The team is led by running back Christian McCaffrey on offense. He is a player that is likely to be there for every play. He has averaged 4.9 yards per carry and 100 receptions in the previous two seasons in a Panthers uniform. DJ Moore, Robbie Anderson and Curts Samuel will be the primary receiving targets this year with plenty of experience to guide the Panthers.

Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will get the starting nod. One thing is certain and that is Bridgewater has much better passing numbers when it happens on play action. Look for the coaching staff to get creative in adding more this year. The first two picks, interior defender Derrick Brown and edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos, will be a welcome additions to the defensive side of the ball.
