The Chicago Cubs edged out the Atlanta Braves with a narrow 3-2 victory at Truist Park. With this win, the Cubs improve their record to 82-63, holding onto second place in the NL Central. Meanwhile, the Braves drop to 65-80, sitting in fourth place in the NL East.
Despite the oppressive 100-degree heat, the Cubs managed to outlast the Braves. Starting at 6:37 PM, both teams fought through the conditions for a game that lasted just over two hours. With a breeze blowing out towards right field at 5 mph, the conditions were ripe for offense, but both teams’ pitchers held their ground.
Key Contributions
The Cubs’ offense was led by Nico Hoerner, who went 3-for-5, scoring once. Connor Kelly’s bat also came to life, with a solo home run contributing to his two-hit day. Seiya Suzuki added another RBI with a sacrifice fly, rounding out Chicago’s scoring.
On the Braves’ side, Marcell Ozuna was a standout, scoring both of the team’s runs. Olson and Alvarez Jr. each contributed with a sacrifice fly and a double respectively to add to the Braves’ tally.
For the Cubs’ pitching staff, Taylor Rogers secured the win by providing a solid one-inning relief appearance without allowing a hit or walk. Jamison Taillon started the game, navigating through 4.1 innings while giving up six hits and two earned runs.
Pitching Duel
Chris Sale took the mound for the Braves, pitching five innings and striking out nine, but he was ultimately tagged with the loss. Despite allowing seven hits and three earned runs, his performance kept the Braves within striking distance.
Out of the bullpen, the Cubs’ staff proved resilient. Relievers like Caleb Thielbar and Andrew Kittredge effectively silenced the Braves’ bats, maintaining the Cubs’ slim lead until the final out.
Phil Johnson, Tyler Kinley, and Dylan Lee were among the Braves’ relievers who effectively kept the Cubs scoreless after Sale’s exit. Unfortunately, their efforts were not enough to mount a comeback.
Season Impact
With this win, the Cubs solidified their position as they continue their pursuit of the NL Central title, remaining six games behind the division leader. The victory also improves their road record to 38-35.
The Braves, however, continue to struggle in a challenging season. Their home record now stands at 35-36, and they remain 20 games back in the NL East standings.
Looking forward, the Cubs will return to Wrigley Field for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays. Manager Craig Counsell will be aiming to maintain the momentum from this game as they continue their playoff push.
Meanwhile, the Braves are set to host the Houston Astros for a series at Truist Park. Manager Brian Snitker will be looking to rally his team to bounce back from the loss and end their season on a high note.
