Rays 5 – Cubs 4 (9/13/2025): Caminero’s Homer Seals Victory

Chicago Cubs vs Tampa Bay Rays Recap: The Rays edged the Cubs 5-4 at Wrigley Field, improving their record to 72-75 while the Cubs fall to 84-63.

The Tampa Bay Rays pulled off a narrow victory against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, clinching a 5-4 win. This victory improved the Rays’ record to 72-75, holding fourth place in the AL East. Meanwhile, the Cubs, now 84-63, maintain their position in second place in the NL Central.

Under a blazing 100-degree sun and with a gentle breeze blowing out to right field, the game saw the Rays’ offense relentlessly chip away at the Cubs’ pitching. Tampa Bay amassed 14 hits, but it was their ability to convert those hits into runs that made the difference.

Rays Shine in the Later Innings

After a scoreless start in the first three innings, both teams began to find their rhythm. The Cubs opened the scoring in the second inning, while the Rays remained silent until the fifth. From there, the Rays were able to capitalize on opportunities, scoring in four of the last five innings.

The sixth inning was particularly significant for the Rays, where they managed to score two runs, closing the gap on the Cubs’ lead. A late-game surge with runs in the eighth and ninth inning ultimately secured the win for Tampa Bay.

Nik Fortes and Junior Caminero provided power at the plate for the Rays. Both players hit crucial home runs that were instrumental in the team’s scoring effort.

Pitching Performance

Drew Rasmussen started on the mound for the Rays, delivering five innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Despite a rocky start, the bullpen held strong to preserve the lead. Bryan Baker earned the win with a solid eighth inning, while Pete Fairbanks sealed the game with a strong ninth, navigating through two walks.

On the Cubs’ side, Colin Rea pitched 5.33 innings, conceding three runs on seven hits. Brad Keller took the loss after giving up the decisive run in the ninth inning. Despite striking out five batters, the Cubs’ bullpen couldn’t contain the Rays’ late offensive push.

Cubs’ Effort Falls Short

For the Cubs, Max Busch and Manuel Ballesteros each contributed home runs. However, the Rays’ defense held firm in the latter part of the game, preventing further scoring. Dansby Swanson also drove in two runs but it wasn’t enough to secure a victory.

Willy Castro had a quiet evening at the plate with no hits, and overall, the Cubs’ lineup only managed six hits. This limited offensive production was a stark contrast to the Rays’ 14-hit performance.

Despite the loss, the Cubs maintain a solid lead in the NL Central. Manager Craig Counsell will look to rally his team as they aim to bounce back in the remaining games of the season.

Up next, the Rays will have another chance to test their mettle against the Cubs in the upcoming game on Sunday at Wrigley Field. Following that, they will return home to face the Toronto Blue Jays in a critical series.

The Cubs, on the other hand, will look to regroup as they continue their homestand against the Rays. With division standings on the line, both teams have every reason to bring their best to the field.
