White Sox 7 – Tigers 5 (9/5/2025): Montgomery Drives in Four in Win

Detroit Tigers vs Chicago White Sox Recap: White Sox take the win 7-5, improving their record to 53-88 while Tigers fall to 81-60.

The Chicago White Sox managed to outplay the Detroit Tigers in a close 7-5 game, held at the sweltering confines of Comerica Park. The victory for the White Sox improved their record to 53-88, as they continue to hold the 5th spot in the AL Central division. Meanwhile, the Tigers, who lead the division, saw their record dip to 81-60.

White Sox’s Offensive Surge

Chicago’s offensive prowess was on display, as they racked up a total of 11 hits against the Tigers. Key performances came from Colson Montgomery, who drove in four runs and added a home run to his tally. Andrew Benintendi also contributed significantly with a solo home run of his own, as well as an RBI.

Leading the charge, Curtis Mead went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while David Fletcher added a pair of doubles, further fueling the White Sox’s attack. The team collectively capitalized on opportunities to stretch their lead through the middle innings.

Tigers Fight Back

On the other side, the Tigers’ bats were led by Parker Meadows, who managed to hit a crucial home run and drive in two runs for his team. Spencer Torkelson also made an impact, going 1-for-4 with an RBI double. Despite their efforts, the Tigers were unable to fully bridge the gap.

Jace Jung also showed hustle by contributing a double, but it wasn’t enough to counter the White Sox’s steady scoring across the innings. Detroit’s attempts to rally in the late innings fell short as they were limited to only one run in the eighth inning.

Pitching Performances

Shane Smith took the mound for the White Sox and delivered five innings of work, allowing four runs on three hits and striking out six. Despite a shaky start, Smith earned the win to improve his record to 4-7. Teammates Tyler Gilbert and Danny Altavilla provided relief, with J.B. Leasure securing the game by holding the Tigers scoreless in the final innings.

For the Tigers, Jack Flaherty started, allowing four runs on six hits over 4.1 innings. Bailey Horn followed and took the loss, surrendering a crucial run in his lone inning on the mound. Kyle Montero and Tyler Holton combined to close out the game, but not without giving up additional runs to the White Sox.

The game was marked by clear skies and a blazing 100-degree temperature, but this did not deter the White Sox, who put up a persistent fight throughout. With Phil Cuzzi behind the plate, the game was efficiently managed, lasting just over two hours.

Upcoming Games

Looking ahead, the White Sox will remain in Detroit to continue their series against the Tigers. Their next game is scheduled for Saturday, September 6th, at Comerica Park. Both teams will be looking to make adjustments and come out strong for the next contest.

As the Tigers aim to strengthen their hold on the division, the White Sox will seek to disrupt Detroit’s momentum and improve their standings in the division. It remains to be seen if the Tigers can regain their footing and display the form that has kept them atop the AL Central.

Despite their struggling record, the White Sox showed determination against a division-leading team, highlighting their potential for growth and upsets in the remaining games of the season. Manager Will Venable and his coaching staff will be keen to build on this performance.
