Those that are baseball fans are fully aware of the writings by Roger Angell as he has produced a marvelous career in baseball literature and has contributed to The New Yorker magazine for several decades (since 1962). The author delves into this fantastic career and shares with us tidbits and insight into the life and times of Roger Angell. Let’s get one thing straight about this book and that is that it is not a biography but about his collection of writings and thoughts on the game.
We learn of the love that Angell has for the Boston Red Sox, since he grew up in the New England area, and for the New York Mets which is the team he has had the privilege to cover during his illustrious career.
The author gets this 98-year old sports writer to open about his thoughts which include the good days and the bad ones in sports writing. It is a real treasure to read this book. A true sports fan will find this book intriguing and fascinating at the same time. You don’t need to be anything except a baseball fan to love this book.
