A National Football League (NFL) season culminates with the annual Super Bowl. The American Football Conference (AFC) champion faces the National Football Conference (NFC) champion. Both teams compete to raise the Vince Lombardi Trophy after the match.
The Super Bowl is considered the biggest sporting event in the United States. It was first held in 1967 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California. Almost 62,000 NFL fans attended the Super Bowl I match between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Since then, 20 NFL teams have won the Super Bowl. Here’s the list of the ten NFL wins with the most Super Bowl wins.
New England Patriots
If you’ve done your NFL research, you’ll know that the team with the most Super Bowl appearance is the New England Patriots. It has played in the Super Bowl 11 times and has won six times. Its first Super Bowl was Super Bowl XX in 1985.
The Patriots have scored 246 points in all its Super Bowl appearances. It competed in consecutive Super Bowls from 2003 to 2004, then 2016 to 2018. Most of the team’s Super Bowl wins were because of NFL’s greatest player, Tom Brady, who recently announced retirement after 23 years in the league.
Pittsburgh Steelers
With a total of six Super Bowl wins, the Pittsburgh Steelers are tied with the New England Patriots with the most Super Bowl wins in the NFL. Unlike the Patriots, it has only appeared in eight Super Bowls. The Steelers last appeared in Super Bowl XLV 13 years ago.
Dallas Cowboys
The world’s most valued professional sports team has won the Super Bowl five times. It has accumulated 221 points in its eight Super Bowl appearances.
Super Bowl XXX in 1995 at the Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, was the last Super Bowl appearance and win for the Cowboys. They have not reached the Super Bowl for almost 30 years now.
San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers have appeared in seven Super Bowls. It has five of them. The 49ers were the dominant NFL team in the 80s; they won their four Super Bowls in 1981, 1984, 1988, and 1989. Their last appearance was Super Bowl LIV in 2019 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
Green Bay Packers
Super Bowl I and II was won by the Green Bay Packers in 1967 and 1968. Since then, the Packers have appeared in three more Super Bowls, winning two. They last competed in the Super Bowl LIV in 2010. They defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 in that match.
New York Giants
2011 was the last Super Bowl appearance of the New York Giants. They defeated the New England Patriots 21-17 during that match. Before that, the Giants competed in four other Super Bowls. They won three out of four.
Their first Super Bowl appearance was in 1986. Super Bowl XXI was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Giants crushed the Denver Broncos 39-20 during the match.
Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos are the only ones with a losing record among the NFL teams with the most Super Bowl wins. They have competed in eight Super Bowls but won only three (1997, 1998, and 2015). Their back-to-back Super Bowl wins in 1997 and 1998 were against the Green Bay Packers and Atlanta Falcons, respectively.
Before that, they also competed in three Super Bowls in the 80s (1986, 1987, and 1989). They lost heavily to the New York Giants, Washington Commanders, and San Francisco 49ers in Super XXI, XXII, and XXIV.
Las Vegas Raiders
The Las Vegas Raiders have won three out of five Super Bowls they’ve competed in. They last won the Super Bowl in 1983. Super Bowl XVIII was held at Tampa Stadium in Tampa, Florida. They haven’t won the Super Bowl for almost 40 years this upcoming 2023 NFL season.
Washington Commanders
The Washington Commanders officially changed their name last season after using the placeholder Washington Football Team for two seasons. Their previous team name was canceled due to its racial connotation with Native Americans.
The Commanders have also not appeared in the Super Bowl for 32 years since they won their third title in 1991. Super Bowl XXVI was held at Hubert H. Humphrey in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They won the match 37-24.
Kansas City Chiefs
The defending Super Bowl champion has won the Vince Lombardi trophy thrice. The Chiefs were among the first two teams to have competed in Super Bowl I, where they lost to the Green Bay Packers.
Between their 1969 and 2019 Super Bowl appearances, the Chiefs experienced a 50-year drought. Since 2019, they’ve won two Super Bowl titles and appeared thrice in four years.
Final Thought
Appearing in the Super Bowl is already an achievement in itself. However, winning the Super Bowl and raising the Vince Lombardi trophy is on a different level. These ten teams have won the Super Bowl at least three times. The four remaining NFL teams to have never appeared in the Super Bowl could only imagine that feeling for now.
