Toronto Blue Jays Preview and Predictions 2024

The Blue Jays had a large number of free agents leave the organization and they include:Brandon Belt, Matt Chapman, Whit Merrifield, Hyun Jin Ryu, Jay Jackson and Adam Cimber, The only real addition to the roster is by signing Isiah Kiner-Falefa from the Yankees.

The rotation looks solid behind Kevin Gausman. He throws a splitter that is hard for batter to pick up and hit. He has to throw it most of the time a his other pitches become very hittable. Jose Berrios had a decent year in 2023 after a very poor 2022. Which one is coming in 2024? His sinker is an out pitch and not the four seam fastball. Chis Bassitt is an innings eater. He is a good #3 in the rotation. Alek Manoah had a terrible season in 2024 as he couldn’t find his command and suffered through some demotions to the minors. Yusei Kikuchi rounds out the pitching rotation with better command than he had previously.

The bullpen will once again call on Jordan Romano. In 2023, he wasn’t as sharp as previous seasons. Evan Swanson was a revelation in the pen. His splitter was one of he best in the majors. He had a 35% strikeout rate last year. Genesis Cabrera was added from the Cardinals bullpen. He is a lefty with a semi nasty cutter. Tim Mayza is a two pitch pony with sliders and sinkers that pound the lower part of the zone.

The catching duties belong to Alejandro Kirk. He would like to forget 2023 due to how miserable it was. Kirk has no power. He a singles hitter that pitchers aren’t afraid to face. Danny Jackson will once agian be his backup. He has some power but little patience. Also, injuries are always an issue.

Infield finds Vladimir Guerrero. He is an enigma in the fact that 2021 was MVP caliber but he hasn’t been able to replicate that for several seasons now. He is not the monster he once was. Defensively, he is questionable. Second base will be rookie Davis Schneider tho has a lot of power in the higher levels of the minors. Bo Bichette mans the shortstop hole. He is a run producer but also chases a ton of pitches of the miss variety. At third, Cavan Biggio will start but also will find himself more in a utility role.

The outfield grades out as above average leading with right field and George Springer. He is apparently showing small amounts of decline but when he is good, he can carry the team. Center field is man by Kevin Kiermaier who is a four time gold glove winner. He is a decent career hitter but has episodes of striking out. Left field goes to Daulton Varsho who has sold out for power. He can be an emergency catcher. Pitchers seem to be challenging him with fastballs more and more.

Prospects: Addison Barger a shortstop who produces power but fans too much. Rickey Tiedemann is a lefty hurler with top stuff. He has had a bicep issue which makes the organization a bit concerned. Brandon Barriera is another left handed pitcher. He got just over 20 iIP in the majors in 2023. His velocity and slider are his best pitches.

Projections: The Blue Jays finish second in the AL East with a 89-73 record.

Next up: Tampa Bay Rays
