Sets of brothers have always been a storyline in the NHL. Quinn and Jack Hughes have taken the league by storm this year, and it had me thinking; who are the best brothers in the NHL? Read on for analysis and ranking of the best sets of brothers in the NHL.
#1 Brady and Matthew Tkachuk
The Ottawa Senators drafted Brady Tkachuk with the 4th overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, and the Calgary Flames drafted Matthew Tkachuk with the 6th overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft.
Brady Tkachuk is currently the Captain of the Senators and has gained 66 points in 62 games played this season. Matt Tkachuk has since left the team that drafted him for the Florida Panthers, where he is the assistant captain and has gained 81 points thru 61 games played.
Brady and Matthew play the game much like their father, Keith Tkachuk, a hall-of-fame player. Brady and Matthew both coincidentally land second on their teams in penalties in minutes. The Tkachuks thankfully provide enough offense to compensate for the penalties and land the #1 overall ranking for active brothers in the NHL.
#2 Quinn, Jack, and Luke Hughes
Jack Hughes was the #1 overall pick in 2019 and is the assistant captain of the New Jersey Devils. Jack Hughes has been every bit of the player he was promised to be, tallying 75 points over 57 games. The Devils have also hit their stride this year as a team, making them cup contenders.
Quinn Hughes was selected 7th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 2018 NHL draft. Quinn has been less fortunate with what the Canucks have surrounded him with, but he has 59 points over 58 games, making him one of the best offensive defensemen in the NHL today.
Luke Hughes was drafted 4th overall, 1st round, by the devils in 2021 but is currently playing at the University of Michigan. Luke has yet to start what is sure to be an illustrious NHL career. The Hughes brothers are here, and they’ll be vying to be the face of the league over the next decade.
#3 Eric, Jordan, and Marc Staal
Eric, Jordan, and Marc are the only trio of brothers in the history of the NHL, NFL, MLB, or NBA who were all selected 12th overall or higher in the Draft. All three brothers are still active in the NHL, and Jordan is the Captain of the Carolina Hurricanes. Eric and Marc currently play for the Florida Panthers.
Although the brothers are way past their prime, the accolades they have amassed over their hall-of-fame careers land them a spot at #3.
